How to Choose a Rotary Tool

!±8± How to Choose a Rotary Tool

A rotary tool can provide you with a great multipurpose hand-held tool to use on a variety of projects.  These tools are great for either professionals or even the at-home do-it-yourself crowd.  Some of the projects you might use a rotary tool for include cutting wood, removing grout, sharpening other tools, cutting heads off stripped screws, etching, engraving, polishing metal and cutting plumbing pipe.  The jobs these rotary tools can be used for are many, so they aren't necessarily limited to those choices either.  So how do you go about selecting the right tool for your particular projects?

There are two different types of rotary tools, and they are the Cut Out and the Basic Rotary tools.  There's only one main difference and that is that the Cut out tools have bigger motors than the basics do.  You can purchase a cut out rotary tool in either a corded or cordless variety, but beware that you will get more power out of a corded variety, while the cordless may provide more ease of use in different spots.  Generally, the motors on these tools go anywhere from one to five amps in terms of their power.

What makes rotary tools so useful is the fact you can use so many different attachments with them for an assortment of projects.  Consider that you can use a circle cutter, grinder, sanders, polisher attachments and guided bits on the Cut Out version of the tools.  You can use a router attachment, table, drill press, flexible shaft, chain shaw sharpener and various bits on the basic rotary tools.  Keep this in mind based on what you might use your tool for the most, or you may just decide you need one of each type of rotary tool for all your projects inside and outside the home!
